    Recent break-ins

     

    There was an attempted break-in at a residence in the New Development in Kahnawake. The Peacekeepers say witnesses saw several kids running away from the home after the attempt. They managed to damage the door frame. Kyle Zachary PR Officer with the Peacekeepers says, that while there have been a few robberies in the last week in the community, he stopped short of calling it a rash of break-ins.

    There were break-ins earlier this week at 2 other homes and at the John Owens Oasis Restaurant. Despite that, the PKs, citing statistics, say the number of break-ins each year have remained consistent throughout the last 5 years.

    First Nations Child and Family Services and Jordan’s Principle Compensation Class Action has provided an Update. In an ongoing effort to enhance communication and provide First Nations peoples with the most up-to-date information on ‘The Settlement,’ the Assembly of First Nations (AFN) will be providing their email subscriber list to the Class Action Administrator, Deloitte, as per a Federal Court Order. The purpose of the subscriber list transfer is to ensure timely updates on the progress of the Compensation Settlement and next steps. The AFN saying that if you prefer not to have your email address included in the list share, to email the AFN Information Desk at FNChildCompensation@afn.ca to have your email removed, with all requests required by October 18th.

    Mercier work tonight

     

    The 132 up-ramp for the Mercier Bridge in Kahnawake, from St. Constant towards Montreal will be closed again tonight from 10 pm to 5:00am pm Friday morning. A detour via R-138 will be in place. The Mercier will also be reduced to 1 lane in either direction this weekend, from 10pm Friday until 11am on Saturday morning with the closure of the southbound portion of the span and the Airlie entrance. In case of rain the work will be moved to Saturday into Sunday.

    The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke administrative offices will be closed for on Monday, October 14th. The Waste Management Department will be closed for cardboard drop-offs. The Transfer Depot will be closed for the holiday. Regular household recycling, compost, and special collections pickup will occur as usual.

    All essential services will remain in operation.

    ISC offices closed

     

    Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) has closed its office in Kahnawà:ke due to safety over the building’s structural integrity. “We received a report that the upstairs floor is abnormally soft in some places, the ceiling beams are warped, and, above all, cracks have appeared in some places,” said a contact from ISC. The MCK’s Asset Management Unit conducted a thorough assessment of the building’s structure on Wednesday.

    As previously announced, the ISC Kahnawà:ke office is scheduled to relocate to Complex Guy Favreau in Montreal, early next year.

    In the interim, community members can access ISC services by phone, by calling 1-800-263-5592 and choosing option 1. You can also access online services at: www.canada.ca/Indian-status-card

  • Pet microchipping clinic

    Pet microchipping clinic

     

    There will be a community-wide microchipping clinic for your pets on the way. The Public Safety Division’s Animal Control Services saying that a veterinarian and veterinary technician will be on-site to perform the service for pet owners. The pet owner’s contact information will be stored on the microchip, that stands at about the size of a grain of rice. The chip will be inserted under the animal’s skin between it’s shoulder blades. This is a standard procedure for veterinarians, animal shelters, and Animal Control Officers to check for these microchips.

    The clinic is scheduled for Saturday, October 26th, from 1 until 5pm at the Animal Control Office located near the Peacekeeper station on the Old Malone Highway.

    Tso-Tso’s Duck Race: a success

     

    Tso-Tso’s 2nd annual Duck Race benefitting the Kateri Memorial Foundation was another great success. Money raised will be distributed by the KMF in memory of Tsotewe Stacey, in tribute to her love of language and culture. Of the funds raised from the duck race, $5,000 (thousand dollars) will be donated to the Longhouse on the 207 for the Fall Sing, to be held on Saturday, November, 30th, $1,000 (thousand dollars) being given to Karonhianonhnha School to assist with curriculum activities and a further $1,000 (thousand dollars) for KSS to help with their 2025 graduation ceremony expenses. Stacey had attended both schools.

    Tso-Tso’s Duck Race will return for year 3 in September 2025.

    Water might be shut off

     

    Public Works crews have begun shutting off water service today to residents who have not paid their annual $59 fee. The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke offering their regrets as they inform of these home water shut-offs that occur annually. The MCK saying that water would be restored once payment is received. Every homeowner receiving a water shut-off had been previously advised of the March 31st deadline, with a final notice also issued.  Community members are urged to check in with their family members to see if they have not paid and had their water shut off. If your water has been turned off, you will be required to pay the regular $59 plus a reconnection fee of $10 before the water is turned back on. Payments can be made weekdays to the cashier at the Kahnawà:ke Office Complex building between the hours of 8:30am and 4pm. Rural homeowners who have not paid run the risk of having to pay out-of-pocket if their well and/or septic system fails. The $59 Water Fee offsets the cost of water & sewer services in the Community, which is approximately $1.25 MILLION Dollars annually, or $600 per home.

    Essential snow removal program

     

    A service intended for low-income elderly and disabled community members for the winter season is now accepting applications. The Essential Snow Removal Program for the 2024-2025 season offered through the Client Based Services (CBS) Unit of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke, will operate from Sunday, December 1st until Monday, March 31st, 2025. The program provides access for emergency service personnel by clearing entryways, such as ramps, stairs, and driveways. The program has a limited number of spaces for clients and previous clientele must re-apply each year. To be eligible, clients must be Kahnawa’kehró:non on the Kahnawà:ke Kanien’kehá:ka Registry who are 65 years of age; living alone with limited income; have physical disabilities and/or medical conditions, verified by a medical professional; and no able-bodied person can be living at the same residence as the client. Applications are now available at the CBS offices located in the Services Complex until Friday, November 15th.

    Mercier Bridge Lane and Ramp Closures This Weekend

    The Mercier Bridge will be one lane in each direction from Friday at 10 pm to Saturday at 11 am. The Airlie entrance will be closed.

    The R-132 down and up ramps in Kahnawake (La Prairie side) close at 11 pm Friday until 7 am Saturday.

    Saturday night, the R-138 down ramp towards Chateauguay will be closed from 10 pm to 7 am Sunday.

    The R-138 up-ramp towards Montreal closes Sunday at 10 pm to Monday at 5 am.
