Public Safety and Health Will Not Lock Down Kahnawake

Kahnawake’s Public Safety and Public Health teams meeting yesterday and are scheduled to meet again this morning following new restrictions being imposed by the Quebec Government in the face of rapidly rising new Coronavirus cases.
“At this point no decisions have been made,” said Lloyd Phillips, the Commissioner of Public Safety. “But we see a major storm brewing and coming our way. We have to, I guess, take appropriate measures. Do we seek shelter, or do we ride out the storm? We have to take measures seriously and again protect Kahnawake infrastructure, protect our community and the health care system.”
Phillips can’t yet say what those measures may be. But he does know that Kahnawake will remain open for business.
“We’re not looking at a lockdown, that I could say for sure. But definitely have to seriously consider measures to mitigate the situation and ensure that we have as minimal impact on our community as possible.”
The Kahnawake Education Center (KEC) is part of those meetings.
“We’re very fortunate in terms of the measures we’ve had in place and continue to put in place that really have given us that extra protection against COVID-19,” said Robin Delaronde, the Director of Education at the KEC. “We’ll continue to do the measures that we’ve already been doing. And we will really look at the situation, even over the holidays, how things are. We’ll be releasing something to community and parents hopefully by Monday at the latest in terms of what our plans would be for return to school.”
