MCK Grand Chief Passes Away

Mohawk Council of Kahnawake (MCK) Grand Chief Joe Tokwiro Norton died at 21:04 Friday evening. He was 70 years old. Norton was first elected to the MCK as a Chief in 1978. Four years later he ran for and was voted in as Grand Chief, a position he held until 2004. He then retired from council and embarked on a career in the private sector. Norton returned to politics in 2015 and won a four way race for Grand Chief. He was re-elected by acclamation in 2018. Norton has suffered from health issues in recent months. Two months ago he was fitted with a pacemaker. Funeral plans have not been released.
