Vegetation Spraying on CP Tracks

Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC – formerly Canadian Pacific Railway) has been authorized to conduct Vegetation Control measures to ensure safe operations of the trains. The Public Safety Division of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke announcing that the spraying is scheduled to take place this Wednesday, June 7th, with rain dates set for June 8th or June 9th. Spraying will take place in the morning with the process lasting approximately 20 minutes. CPKC must follow Transport Canada’s Rules Respecting Track Safety meaning they are required to spray the tracks to control vegetation. Vegetation control products will only be applied to the16-feet wide track ballast, with all products used by CPKC having received prior approval by the Health Canada Pest Management Regulatory Agency.

Ratsénhaienhs Ryan Montour, Portfolio Lead on Public Safety saying: “Vegetation management is important, as it allows certified track inspectors to regularly assess the condition of the railway tracks, keeping the tracks clear of vegetation also allows for proper drainage of the ballast (the rocks that hold the ties in place) to help prevent degradation of the tracks. The most relevant issue here is to prevent train derailments to protect our people.”
