Step By Step To Remain Closed For the Rest of the Week

Impacted by a Covid-19 outbreak, Step by Step Child and Family Center will remain closed today and Friday. Executive Director Natalie Beauvais said the decision is based on recommendations from Kahnawake Public Health.
“We waited for the attestations to come in, negative attestations, and we were hoping too have a lot more,” Beauvais said. “We still have 48 missing which was not enough to give us a good understanding where things are within the entire centre. We now stand at 11 positives cases: two outbreaks in classes 4 and 5 and the other three are in other classrooms.”
Beauvais says that if students aren’t tested, they won’t be allowed to return to the centre.
“If parents are not getting their children tested we don’t know if children are walking around asymptomatic or if they’re going to develop symptoms in the coming days. We have to have a better picture before we can allow everybody into the centre because it’s really going to wreak havoc with everything. We need those answers,” Beauvais said.
She says she understands that COVID fatigue has set in.
“We sent out an email last evening to those 48 individuals. Some are choosing not to have their children tested. Parents are scared, frustrated, angry. Some have had their children tested over 10 times.”
There are 26 active cases of COVID-19 in Kahnawake as of late Wednesday. More than 50 individuals remain in isolation.
