Protesting Drugs in the Community

Written by on 8 March 2021

There was a meeting and protest held in Kahnawà:ke last night over the issue of drugs in the community. Several dozen people gathered at the sacred fire on the 132 greenspaces. Fran Beauvais was behind organizing the event:

“It just came about because I was reading Facebook yesterday and the day before and for weeks now, people have been talking about living in fear, the drugs that are being sold in this community, feeling helpless, feeling afraid. Not wanting to go out of their homes, afraid to leave their homes. The amount of deaths that we’ve had in this community that are related to drugs.”

Beauvais says about 50 people were on hand and they discussed all numerous issues:

“We’re looking at and saying, ‘what are we going to do.” It’s more about the awareness, education, we have people, we had a lot of men there who were actually users before and you know they’re willing to talk about their stories and what they’ve been through if it’s going to help people, if it’s going to help the youth.”

Another ‘driving through the community’ protest was organized for Monday at 5 pm at the Greenspace.
