Zero New COVID-19 Cases in Nine Days

There are two active cases of COVID-19 in Kahnawake.
“That’s great news,” said Lisa Westaway the Executive Director of the Kateri Memorial Hospital Center as she appeared on the K1037 Morning D show on Monday. “We know that by the end of the day tomorrow (Tuesday), if nobody develops symptoms and becomes positive, that the outbreak at Step By Step will be complete. So we still have another two days before we can claim that. However, we do know that the screenings that have been done up until now have been negative.”
As of today Canadians returning home from a non-essential trip at any one of the country’s 117 land border crossings will have to provide a negative test taken within the last 72 hours. There is no exemption for people who have been vaccinated. Violators face fines of up to $3,000. That could have a direct impact on many Kahnawake residents who work in the United States or go there for other official purposes such as Veterans affairs ad VA hospital treatments.
“Certain things are beyond our control. What the border guards or the border agents tell you, what Canadian law tells you, it’s outside Kahnawake jurisdiction,” said Kahnawake Commissioner of Public Safety Lloyd Phillips. “It’s very hard for us to balance that at times. But rest assured again that we are looking at all the changes, how it impacts us and if there’s any means for us to modify what we’re doing to easy the lives of Kahnawakero:non.”
