With New Year’s eve quickly approaching – a new plea from the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake for community members to refrain from randomly firing their guns into the air. This after there was a close call in the South Texas area on the weekend. Mitchell Dunkley says his family Jeep was damaged by a stray bullet. “Sunday night I heard gunshots,” Dunkley said. “That’s common. You hear that often. I woke up Monday morning, I got in the Jeep and I noticed the window was cracked. So I asked my son if anything happened? He said no. Then I noticed there was a hole in the canvas roof. Then i found a bullet on the floor. It must have been someone shooting, and it went through, hit the window and hit the floor.”
Dunkley says it happened at around 8:10 PM on Sunday. He says that despite the damage, he and his family were lucky. “Especially when you see the result of it. If that would have hit one of us I’m sure it would have…. People need to be aware of where they are shooting. You shouldn’t be shooting that kind of gun in the air anyways,” Dunkley said.
Dunkley says the insurance adjuster will only arrive on Monday January 4th. he says he will have to pay the $500 deductible out of pocket to fix the damage to the Jeep.
