Bars and Gaming to Remain Closed in Kahnawake

Written by on 4 August 2020

The Kahnawake COVID-19 Task Force has delayed the August 10th scheduled re-opening of bars and gaming establishments. “We’ve always said we’ve looked at what’s happening around us and the fact that when Quebec opened bars and started increasing the amount of people for gatherings, we see that that has contributed greatly to the amount of new cases,” said Lisa Westaway, the Executive Director of the Kateri Memorial Hospital Centre. “When alcohol is involved, when you have locations where it is difficult to social distance, you have people who let their guards down and your case numbers increase. We wanted to avoid that happening especially so close to the start of the school year.”

No new date for the reopening has been set.  The task force also says it is maintaining public gatherings at a maximum of 50 people in Kahnawake. Quebec increased that to 250 on Monday.  It also remains 10 people who are permitted to gather at private residences provided they are able to physically distance.
