Local Business Shutters For Good Due to Pandemic

Written by on 7 July 2020

A local victim of the Coronavirus in Kahnawake. McComber Convenience store in the Village announced that it has shut its doors permanently.  Mary McComber briefly worked in the store that was owned by her parents and her sister. “They didn’t have to close. They decided to close because my parents, my sister, they all have chronic illness and they’re at risk. And the store is directly connected to the house. So we really couldn’t afford to have my parents or somebody getting sick,” McComber said.

McComber’s has been a mainstay on the River Road for more than a quarter century.

“We have mixed feelings,” Mary said. “Obviously they have been doing this some time now. Their doors opened in 1993. That’s when the store opened in the old part of the house. In 1999 they made the big renovation on the other side and that’s where the building is now. They have been used to working, since the Indian Village as well, they have always had their own business. So, it’s a big change for the family as well so there are mixed feelings there.”
