Deer’s ‘Beans’ on Screen: Friday

Written by on 29 June 2021

A big screen debut in Quebec on Friday for Kahnàwake filmmaker Tracey Deer and her film ‘Beans.’ The movie is about a young teenager’s coming of age during the OKA crisis. Deer is the co-writer and director of the film and she says the timing of the release of Beans could not be more appropriate in light of the recent discovery of hundreds of unmarked graves at Residential schools across Canada:

“I hate that it takes some of these kind of discoveries for people to actually pay attention, to actually feel, to be engaged. We are at a time right now where the rest of the world and specifically the Canadians, seem to be waking up. You know we have this global reckoning happening at the moment and I hope that the film is a contribution in the time we are currently in to continue adding to that awakening, because we do need, we need Canadians and we need people around the world, we need this awakening to happen so that these abuses and these injustices no longer happen.”

‘Beans’ is being released at CINEPLEX theaters on 14 screens in both English and French across Quebec.
