  • SQ Operation on Water Snarls Mercier Bridge Commute

    The Surete du Quebec (SQ) has told K1037 News that they were on the scene at the Montreal end of the Mercier Bridge Tuesday morning. They could not specify why. However, they did say that they conducted a search in the water near LaSalle. The SQ was on scene between 2:45 am and left just before 8 am.

    The Kahnawake Peacekeepers say the SQ found an abandoned vehicle on the Montreal bound side of the bridge. They called the PKs at03:46 am. The vehicle belongs to a non local 29 year old female. The investigation continues.

  • Massive Turnout for Trunk or Treat on a Perfect Day

    Over 1500 community members showed up on Saturday for a spooktacular afternoon as part of Trunk or Treat. The event returned to Kahnawake for the first time since before the pandemic. There were 25 trunks, food & snack trucks, and two movies were shown during the evening.

    “Looking at the kids faces, they were so happy, excited,” Noreen Montour, the team leader at the family and wellness center who was one of the organizers of Trunk or Treat, told K1037 News. “It was great to see people visiting with each other and standing around talking or sitting around eating and families together. That was the whole point of the event, to try to bring people together. At one point I looked over at the playground and there were so many kids playing on the equipment and it was so fun to see that.”

    They raised over $3000 for the Kateri Food Basket.

  • Three Candidates Come Forward For MCK By-Election

    Three candidates put their names forward on Saturday morning for the by-election for one vacant seat at the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake (MCK). According to Electoral Officer Angus Montour, the list remains unofficial for now until their credentials can be verified. The candidates are Stephen McComber, David A. Diabo and Wahiio Delisle. They will join us on the Tetewatha:ren Partyline Talk Show on Thursday. For all Nominees, the deadline to declare or decline their nomination is Tuesday at 12 noon. Candidate’s night is this Thursday at 6 pm at the Knights of Columbus.

  • New MCK Capital Unit Director Appointed

    Brendan Montour has been appointed as the new Director of the Capital Unit of The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke. Montour began his MCK career back in 1986 as a technician for the construction of the Sports Complex and continued working as a summer student in-between semester studying at CEGEP for Mechanical Engineering Technology. After graduating, he began working full-time at the Capital Unit in February, 1989. Montour was the Director of Public Works until August of this year when he was asked to assist at the Capital Unit. During this time, Martin Morris has been filling the role of Acting Director of Public Works. A final determination on that position is expected shortly.

    Brendan Montour formally begins his new role on October 31, 2022.

  • Lafreniere Remains on Indigenous Relations Portfolio

    Premier François Legault unveiling the new Quebec cabinet during a ceremony at the national assembly that started after 2pm today. After winning 90 of the legislature’s 125 seats in the October 3rd’s provincial election, Legault told reporters after his re-election that his new cabinet will be composed of between 40 and 60 per cent women. In a late announcement, Ian Lafrenière remains in his role as minister responsible for relations with First Nations and Inuit. The response from the community was swift. Ratitsénhaienhs Mike Delisle of the MCK says this was an expected decision:

    “I would say, not really a surprise and we’ll hold comment on good news depending on how much progress we can make in the next 20 months or so. The expectation was that he would be renewed, I know he had an interest, so, you can call it pleasantly agreeable at this point and we’ll find out what we can do in the next 20 months.”

    Christian Dubé stays on in the health portfolio that he previously held. The Transports Minister job comes back to Geneviève Guilbault, who also retains her Vice-Premiere role in the National Assembly. Eric Girard stays in as Finance Minster. Pierre Fitzgibbon economy minister. Christopher Skeete was named minister responsible for the fight against racism

  • Child Hit By Vehicle Taken to Hospital With Non Life Threatening Injuries

    A scary accident in Kahnawake Tuesday evening. A child under the age of 10 was ridding a bicycle when he was hit by a vehicle on Church Road adjacent to the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake. According to the Kahnawake Peacekeepers the accident happened at around 5:55 pm. The child was transported to the Montreal Children’s Hospital with non life threatening injuries. The Police and Fire Brigade response was large because it was during a shift change, according to the PKs.

  • Some School Delays Because of Bus Shortage in Kahnawake

    Four school buses are in the shop at the town garage. That is why Bus 4 that takes students to Howard S. Billings High School in Chateauguay has been 20-30 minutes late on Monday and Tuesday. The driver of Bus 4 has actually had to wait for another bus to return from its run before she could begin picking up the students and take them to school.

    Spencer McComber, the Daily Transportation Manager with the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake says that busing to local schools is not affected, but there are some delays for those being bused outside of the community.

    “We have two in the garage right now taken apart,” McComber told K1037 News. I was out earlier getting parts trying to get them back on the road. I have one at a garage in Chateauguay awaiting parts, and I have the last mini-bus awaiting parts from Bluebird for repair.  We have a few issues beyond our control. We can’t just magically have another bus.”

    McComber says his department has put a plan into place to make sure that everyone gets to school on time on Wednesday.

  • Montour Appointed Electoral Officer For Nov. 5 MCK By-Election

    Angus L. Montour has been selected as the Electoral Officer for the upcoming by-election for the position of one (1) Ratsénhaienhs (Elected Council Chief). This comes in the wake of the resignation of Ratsénhaienhs Alan John Rice.   As per the Kahnawà:ke Election Law, now that Rice’s resignation was read into the record at Monday’s Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke meeting, the by-election process can officially get underway.

    • Nomination Day – Saturday, October 22, 10am to 12 noon at the Kahnawà:ke Services Complex
    • Meet the Candidates Night – Thursday, October 27, 6pm to 11pm at the Knights of Columbus Hall
    • Special Advanced Poll – Wednesday, November 2, 5pm to 7pm at the Golden Age Club (submit letters of intent by noon on Monday, October 31)
    • By-Election – Saturday, November 5, Polls open 9am to 4pm at Karonhianónhnha Tsi Ionterihwaienstáhkhwa School

    Muriel White-Rice was appointed as the Assistant Electoral Officer. They will set the agenda for Nomination Day, Meet the Candidates Night, and the By-Election Date. It appears that the election will be at the beginning of November.

    This is the 7th election that Montour is working in Kahnawake as the electoral officer.

    “Yes, although it’s quite strange having to do it within five-and-a-half weeks,” Montour told KK1037 News. “Very stressful to have to get everything prepared so much ahead of time.”

  • Rosanne Norton Resigns as MCK HR Director

    After 9 years as Director of the Human Resources Unit at the Mohawk Council of Kahnàwake, Rosanne Norton has resigned from the position, effective Friday, November 25th.  Norton began her career at the Lands Department of the MCK in August of 2007, transferring to HR in 2008. Throughout her tenure, she held several positions within the Unit until assuming the role of Director in August of 2013. During the Pandemic, Norton and her team worked diligently to ensure the day-to-day needs of the MCK while assisting other local organizations with staffing to ensure essential services were maintained. As employees and services shifted to a remote-based work environment, Norton helped coordinate and ensure that employees were able to perform their duties under new and sometimes hazardous work conditions.

    Over the years, Rosanne Norton assisted in the development and implementation of many human resource systems and processes, all which have contributed to improving internal functions of the MCK. The position of Director of Human Resources will be posted in the near future.  As Rosanne transitions out of the position, assistance and oversight will be provided by the Executive Administrative Officer who oversees the Human Resources Unit.

  • Mercier Bridge Inspection Work

    Mercier Bridge and corridor work on tap for the overnight. Expect a complete night closure of the 138-East access ramp towards Montreal and a partial closure of the right lane towards Montreal for inspection work. The work is scheduled to start tonight at 9 p.m. to tomorrow, Thursday at 5 a.m.
