  • Hydro Line 2: Removed

The removal of Hydro Line 2 is officially complete and signed off by the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake. Lindsay Leborgne was in charge of the file at the MCK:

“They replanted trees, they planted grass, they removed soil around each tower, because of the contamination from the zinc coating on the towers over the years, it flaked off after 60 years being there, so, soil had to be removed, it was taken out of the territory. Fresh soil was brought back in. We had KEPO, our own environmental office, went checking the work and they were satisfiesd that everything was done according to the agreement that we struck with Hydro many years ago, now.”

Leborgne says that the process has taken over time:

“It’s been about 5 years, they removed every tower and base that they could except the 4 that were left at Irving Goodleaf’s property and that was negotiated. He didn’t want them removed. They negotiated with him to leave them there and the bases of the towers that were on the north wall of the Seaway, those were the large towers that were probably upwards of 300 ft high so the towers were extremely large and they were right on the riverside and there was a worry by Hydro  that if they started digging down, because those bases were quite big, that you could have a breach in the wall of the seaway through the river.”

  • SQ in Kanesatake

Numerous police officers from the Sûreté du Québec landed in Mohawk territory, late this morning, to conduct searches in commercial buildings belonging to Sharon Simon of Kanesatake. Police were searching four places in the community: Simon’s main residence, her new casino, her gas station and her “potty shack”. Officers were on scene with an armored truck and given the historical tensions between the Mohawks community and police, authorities were ready for any eventuality and several intervention units were on site on standby. No arrests were reported as the “searches are under investigation” for drug trafficking.

Simon, a well-known face in Kanesatake, is the mother of Annie Arbic, whose lavish wedding to powerful Hells Angels member Martin Robert in the heart of downtown Montreal caused much ink to flow in 2018. As part of this same investigation, police officers from the Sûreté du Québec carried out a search of the luxurious residence of Hells Robert Barletta, in Saint-Jérôme, in the Laurentians.

The raids were not connected to the May 25th raids in Kanesatake at the Mohawk Council and Health Centre offices in connection with a fraud investigation.

  • Vegetation Spraying on CP Tracks

Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC – formerly Canadian Pacific Railway) has been authorized to conduct Vegetation Control measures to ensure safe operations of the trains. The Public Safety Division of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke announcing that the spraying is scheduled to take place this Wednesday, June 7th, with rain dates set for June 8th or June 9th. Spraying will take place in the morning with the process lasting approximately 20 minutes. CPKC must follow Transport Canada’s Rules Respecting Track Safety meaning they are required to spray the tracks to control vegetation. Vegetation control products will only be applied to the16-feet wide track ballast, with all products used by CPKC having received prior approval by the Health Canada Pest Management Regulatory Agency.

Ratsénhaienhs Ryan Montour, Portfolio Lead on Public Safety saying: “Vegetation management is important, as it allows certified track inspectors to regularly assess the condition of the railway tracks, keeping the tracks clear of vegetation also allows for proper drainage of the ballast (the rocks that hold the ties in place) to help prevent degradation of the tracks. The most relevant issue here is to prevent train derailments to protect our people.”
