The City of Montreal has unveiled its Reconciliation Strategy with Indigenous Peoples and The Assembly of First Nations Quebec-Labrador (AFNQL) is welcoming the announcement. Representing Kahnawà:ke at the announcement was Chief Gina Deer from the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke:

Chief Deer has been impressed with Montreal’s response to the strategies:

“I think Montreal has been doing an excellent job at reconciliation, I actually thank the Mayor Valerie Plante for continuing the work. We do know that there was a change in administration at one point from the former Mayor Denis Coderre who had started doing the work and she has insisted that it continue and they’re doing a great job at it.”

Chief Deer says this is the action plan, but it’s not the 1st attempt:

“This is the action plan, so yes it’s going to be, I wouldn’t say the 1st because they’ve already been doing things through reconciliation but this is a continuation and now there’s an actual framework for them.”

AFNQL Chief Ghislain Picard saying that it is an appropriate response to the Viens Commission Public Inquiry on relations between Indigenous Peoples and certain public services in Quebec, as well as to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
