The new Kahnawà:ke Highway Patrol Unit- a division of the Kahnawà:ke Peacekeepers (PKs)- is set to begin operating on Monday, according to the Eastern Door.
The shift of mostly veteran officers will begin at 6AM and wrap up at the end of the evening rush hour. The officers are expected to patrol Routes 138, 132 and 207; handing out tickets, mitigating traffic, and responding to incidents.
Public Relations Officer Kyle Zachary says the new Unit will provide more time for the rest of the PKs to focus on community policing. “It gives our Peacekeepers the opportunity to have more coverage of our territory”, Zachary said. “In the past, when our Peacekeepers go out at the beginning of their shift, they have to deal with morning rush hour traffic,” he added. “So while they’re out there handling the traffic, there’s still a community to patrol- to serve”.
Zachary says that on a daily basis, around 130,000 motorists make their way through the territory on their way to Montreal.
