Tioweró:ton: Inundated With Water
Written by Jeremy Zafran on 24 June 2024
Road Closures in various parts of Tioweró:ton: the area is inundated with water. The roads are flooded in various areas and the Caretakers are continuing to monitor the situation. The Lands Unit of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke is advising the community of severe flooding in Tioweró:ton, making all roads inaccessible. Due to the water levels, it is presently unknown whether there are also washouts in culvert areas. Tioweró:ton is still under a rainfall warning, and water levels are expected to continue rising. As the flooding conditions create an extreme danger risk to safety, community members are advised not to access the Territory or venture onto any of the flooded roads to allow Caretakers to focus on ensuring safety during this time.
Community members are asked to refrain from calling for updates on their cabins. It is strongly encouraged to stay informed through the Tioweró:ton Facebook page, which will provide timely updates on when the roads are reopened.
This follows last weeks water sampling results in Tioweró:ton that detected a high level of E.coli at the first Bridge and the Falls. As a precaution, Kahnawa’kehró:non had been advised not to swim in that area until further notice. Water testing will continue, and updates will be provided to the community as they become available. The next test will be on Monday, July 1st, weather permitting. You can reach out to the Public Safety Division at 450-632-0635 or Environmental Health Services at 450-635-9945 for more information.
