The Sports and Recreation Unit (SRU) of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke and the Kahnawà:ke Youth Center (KYC) have formed a partnership to establish the Kahnawà:ke Recreation Steering Committee (KRSC). It has two major tasks. Kyle Zacharie is the Executive Director of the Youth Center:
“We are going to have a recreation master plan. Basically it’s going to look at all of the demographics and the trends in the community and around and see how the community can do better in terms of recreation. For Sports and Recreation I know they are looking at different parks or different services they can offer, but for the Youth Center, we are looking at taking all that the information, all those demographics and speaking with the community so that we can complete a feasibility study and a concept design for a renovated or expand Youth Center or a brand new construction.”
All of this is intended to streamline operations for the 2 organizations, avoid redundancy and make it better for the community. Roiatate Horn is the Director of the Sports and Recreation Unit at the MCK:
“It’s going to give us an assessment of all of our parks and fields in the community. It’s going to tell us what needs to be changed, and it’s going to give us hard data that we need to go to funders to renovate or redo some of our parks and fields.”
They will be hosting a community summit on sports on June 27th.
