CCTV Camera Monitoring Petition
Written by Jeremy Zafran on 15 May 2024
A local actor from Kahnawake has launched an on-line petition with the intention of having Closed-Circuit Television Cameras installed throughout the community. The purpose of the cameras is to keep the community safer. Actor Kaniehtiio Horn is asking the Mohawk Council and the Peacekeepers to have cameras placed at all entrances to Kahnawake. The CCTV signals would not be publicly distributed but are monitored, primarily for surveillance and security purposes:
“I started a petition because I got really tired and anxious seeing the almost daily reports of sketchy incidents involving sketchy non-residents around Kahnawake. You know I’m a member of the community, I’m a mother and I’m an auntie, and I don’t want it to take something happening to one of our community members for some sort of action to take place.”
The cameras would be placed in town, including on highways that pass through the community and “any other streets that non-residents have easy access to such as The Mohawk Trail, Clay Mountains and the OCR.”
The petition can be found at Change.org. Just search: ‘CCTV Kahnawake.’ At the time of this report being published, the petition had received 189 residents who had signed the petition out of the requested 200.
