MCK Decries Exclusion from Terrapure Meeting

Written by on 22 January 2026

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) released a statement yesterday expressing deep concern over being excluded from an emergency meeting regarding Terrapure Environment- the Sainte-Catherine based recycling plant accused of dumping contaminated water into the St. Lawrence River.

The meeting reportedly took place on January 20, 2026, and the MCK only became aware of it after the city of Sainte-Catherine posted about it on its website. Representatives from a laundry list of organizations, all the way from the Roussillon Municipalités regionales de comté (MRC) to Environment and Climate Change Canada, were in attendance- but not a soul from the MCK.

Ohén:ton Í:rate ne Ratitsénhaienhs Cody Diabo calls the exclusion “appalling and unacceptable”, adding that “it sends a troubling message that Kahnawake is not considered relevant in decisions that directly impact our Territory”.

Municipal Government Relations Portfolio-holder Iohahí:io Delisle says the exclusion of the MCK also goes against past agreements. “Additionally, not informing us is in direct violation of the communication protocol between the MRC and Kahnawà:ke as defined in our Technical Liaison Committee,” said Delisle.

The MCK is now demanding that all relevant entities meet to discuss these concerns.
