The Kateri Memorial Hospital Centre (KMHC) has embarked on a special initiative to recognize the critical importance of maintaining the confidentiality of sensitive information within the KMHC environment. Confidentiality Week is being supported by the KMHC’s Board of Directors to promote and re-iterate a culture of trust, safety, integrity, and responsibility among all employees concerning patient, client, resident and employee information. Sha’teiohserí:io Patton, Communications/Public Relations Officer:
“It’s not the first time that the KMHC has participated in Confidentiality Week, but it is the first time that we are trying to engage to this extent with the public. So, we really want our users, our visitors, our patients to be engaged with our policies as well as to be informed about what our processes are for protecting their information.”
There will also be an awareness banner erected in the main lobby/waiting area to remind the public that everyone’s privacy should be respected. Patton says this is Canada-wide initiative:
“Confidentiality Week is actually a national and provincial week that happens in Canada. It’s tailored to health care organizations that deal with sensitive information and basically it’s an engagement week to inform and give knowledge to community members and users about our processes that deal with confidentiality and privacy.”
Confidentiality Week is being supported by the KMHC’s Board of Directors to promote and re-iterate a culture of trust, safety, integrity, and responsibility among all employees concerning patient, client, resident and employee information. Executive Director Valerie Diabo says that: “It is good policy to remind everyone just how important confidentiality is.”
Diabo saying that the KMHC realized that some of their policies needed to be updated, and that all employees – including directors and managers – should undergo mandatory training on confidentiality and data protection. There will also be an awareness banner erected in the main lobby/waiting area to remind the public that everyone’s privacy should be respected.
Various staff activities will take place throughout the week, beginning with a presentation to staff by the Chairperson of the Board of Directors, Kim Martin, on Monday. She will explain the Resolution passed by, the Board in June to celebrate Confidentiality Week.
