MCK Suspensions Dolled Out
Written by Jeremy Zafran on 14 June 2024
Mohawk Council of Kahnawake (MCK) grand chief Kahsennenhawe Sky-Deer and MCK chief Ross Montour were issued suspensions by the Council of Chiefs earlier this month, The Eastern Door is reporting. Sky-Deer was suspended for one day and Montour for two days. According to the report this relates to the libel lawsuit brought against the council and Specifically against Ratsisahiens Cody Diabo by former Mohawk Online top executive Dean Montour, largely based on comments allegedly made about him by Diabo at Council meetings last summer.
In his lawsuit, launched in March, Dean Montour alleges these comments were shared with him by Sky-Deer, Ross Montour, and then-MCK chief Mike Delisle, who now heads up the Kanien’kehá:ka registry at the council. When reached by K1037 News this morning Delisle had no official comment. Preferring to allow the legal proceedings to play out. Diabo told K1037 News he can’t comment on the situation.
No comment from MCK, with Public Relations referred us back to their June 6th press release which read, in part: “the Council of Chiefs recently addressed an internal matter related to Council Chief conduct. We assure the community that the decision taken is based on protecting the integrity of the MCK as an organization and was taken in the best interests of the community. No other information can be provided at this time.”
