It’s Disabilities Awareness Week and it kicked off with the Challenger Baseball match-up for extraordinary athletes this weekend at the Hospital ball Field. Iris Phillips Advocacy Coordinator for Connecting Horizons on the amazing day and what it means for the players:
“Our 3rd annual baseball game was another success, it was absolutely amazing to see everybody out there having a great time, showcasing their abilities and all the fans in the stands that came out to support. We had lots of activities, we had things that we were giving away to help promote the program and awareness. We had hot dogs and pop corn and slushes it was really fun, it was an heart-warming event.”
Other events this week include the wheelchair challenge. Phillips explains:
“Today is the office wheelchair challenge, where we stuck 3 people in wheelchairs to will navigate their office throughout the day. We have Derek Montour, Sydney Ross and Jessica Lazare who are going to be navigating their office environment today and if they have to go to another office, the challenge now they have to get themselves to their cars and into the other building. Basically, that one is to bring awareness to their surroundings and how they can make their workspace more accommodating and welcoming for clients and visitors.”
K1037’s Morning Crew, Hiio and Paul, are taking the challenge on Thursday:
“Wednesday morning, they are going to be in the hot seat, they are going to be in the chair themselves and navigating <your> office, bright and early at 5:20 am, I’m not looking forward to being up that early, but I did promise that I would be there to give them the walk through on what they need to do.”
