Kawennáhere Devry Jacobs, who is rolling off the successful run of Reservation Dogs a recent Indigenous themed Marvel “what If’ episode is back with a vengeance, this time on the big screen. Jacobs has produced and acts in ‘Backspot.’ This film is about cheerleading. But Jacobs says, it’s so much more:

“I play the character Riley who is moving from her 1 mid-level cheer squad up to the ‘Thunderhawks,’ this squad that’s really hoping to be a part of and one that does really well, is more elite, and when she get s on that squad, her coach is run by Evan Rachel Wood, who kinds of runs the squad with an iron fist and Riley who is out and Queer and has a girlfriend, learns that her coach is also queer and so she idolizes her. But, Riley suffers from a lot of anxiety, she’s really obsessive with wanting to please her coach and get the approval from her coach and ultimately she needs to form a healthier relationship with cheerleading.”

Jacobs had been active in this film’s development for close to 6 years. ‘Backspot’ is coming to theatres on May 31st, it will premier at select theatres including at the Forum Cineplex in Montreal.
