R-138 Traffic Study
Written by Jeremy Zafran on 23 April 2024
Get ready for a traffic study that will be conducted on the 138 at the Playground intersection. The Public Works Department study, authorized by the MCK, is being conducted by the Ministère des Transports du Québec (MTQ) and will take place between Thursday, April 25th and Monday, April 29th. The study will help determine if adjustments are needed to be made to the timing of the traffic signals, and other possible improvements to help increase the safety of motorists. David Lahache is the transport coordinator for the MCK on what is planned:
“The study will take a look at that particular intersection and see how many cars are accessing the Playground area. The issue we have right now is with the timing of the traffic signals. During peak times, there doesn’t seem to be enough time for cars to exit or enter the property and this is also a safety issue because people who don’t make the light tend to either run the yellow or just run the red. What we’re trying to do is gather is all the data that we can to see what improvements we can make to that particular intersection for public safety.”
In order to conduct the survey, a specialized camera will be installed by the MTQ at the intersection on Wednesday, April 24th and removed on Tuesday, April 30th. The camera system being used for this study is designed to only gather data on vehicular traffic and does not take pictures of license plates or drivers. The MCK will be involved to find solutions:
“The MCK does have input on it because it does affect local traffic and we do work very closely with the MTQ to try and resolve some of these issues. Once the date is analyzed and they come back with their recommendations, we’ll meet with the MTQ and with the owners of the property and Playground to discuss what steps they’d like to take. We’re all working together to try and ensure that that intersection remains as safe as possible and to help improve traffic flow in and out of the property.”
This study is being conducted with permission of the landowner and Playground. Study information will be also be analyzed with the data used to explore the possibility of creating a pedestrian crosswalk at that intersection, with proper traffic signals.
