Election Law Feedback: Meeting February 21
Written by Jeremy Zafran on 20 February 2024
The Feedback Report for the proposed amendments to the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke Election Law is now available for viewing. The feedback was compiled during the 30-day review period that took place from January 19 to February 18. The Law was last amended in February of 2018, “The Law is intended to provide criteria and procedures for the nomination and selection of a twelve (12) member Council composed of eleven (11) Ratitsénhaienhs and one (1) Ohén:ton Í:iente ne Ratitsénhaienhs.” Allan John Rice is the Executive Operations Officer with the MCK:
“The Law itself has been in place for quite a while, what’s happening with this one is that during the last term, there had been some requests for amendments done by both community members and the different units that take part in running the election. So, that’s what these amendments are and that’s what we are looking at. The feedback report is just a different feedback that we received via our pre-work with focus groups, as well as selecting our technical drafting committee along with the community reps.”
Rice says there was a decent level of participation. The community meeting will be held tomorrow, February 21st at the Moose lodge from 6-9pm. If more time is required another meeting will be held on the 22nd.
