Written by Jeremy Zafran on 11 July 2023
A Community Stakeholders Consultation will be held tonight at the Golden Age Club from 6pm to 8:30pm. Allan John Rice is the Executive Operations Officer with the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake on what’ s on the agenda:
“When the law goes back through the CDMP process, essentially what we’re doing is asking Community Stakeholders to come and verify the changes and amendments that were requested as far back as 2 years ago. There were some amendments requested by community members and by different Stakeholders of the elections: the Electoral Officer, Office of Council of Chiefs and MCK Justice. Some of those are meant to make the procedural aspects of the election go a lot smoother, others were different parts of the law that community members elected to change. So, today, we’re looking to get the scope of the work that’s going to happen and to get an actual mandate from the community to go there make amendments to the Election Law.”
Rice saying that there will be a selection of three (3) Community Representatives to sit on the Technical Drafting Committee. The purpose of the Law is intended to provide the criteria and procedures for the nomination and selection of a twelve (12) member Council, composed of eleven Ratitsénhaienhs and Ohén:ton Í:iente ne Ratitsénhaienhs. The scope is to assist with managing the election process as efficiently and effectively as possible.
