Kahnawake Shoreline Cleanup A Success

Written by on 17 October 2022

Four Hundred and Two kilograms of garbage and recycling was picked up along the shores of Kahnawake near the Marina on Saturday. It was part of the Kahnawake Environment Protection Office’s second annual shore line clean-up. Forty volunteers, including divers, helped out .

Julie Delisle is the Environmental Education Liaison with KEPO. Delisle says it was depressing to see the amount of junk strewn along the shore…

“They found a lot of scrap metal, a lot of fishing gear, nets, a lot of fishing line, a lot of rope. On shore our volunteers cleaned up a lot of cans, which was pretty sad to see.”

Julie Delisle says they are looking to make the shoreline clean up an annual event, and says there is an app that lets the community point out problems…

“That is the waste dumping tracker app from the Environment Office. So if there is an area that has a lot of material that looks like it was dumped there,  you can use our app to give us notice to check it out and maybe clean it up, or find out who the best person would be to clean it up.”

Aside from the shoreline cleanup, KEPO also helps organize the Eastern Door spring clean up around the community.
