State of Emergency Ends
Written by Jeremy Zafran on 21 February 2022
The state of emergency in the community has been lifted. The announcement was made today by Kahnawà:ke’s Public Safety and Public Health who determined that the situation no longer warranted a State of Emergency. This change affects the mandate for the COVID-19 Task Force that will also expire. The mandate will continue to be carried out by the Commissioner of Public Safety, Lloyd Phillips, in collaboration with the Council of Chiefs, in order to maintain consistency and direction until such time as there is a full return to normalcy declared in the community. Ryan Montour is MCK’s Public Safety Portfolio Chief on what to expect in terms of changes:
“I think it’s not ‘exciting news’ but ‘welcome news,’ we’re well aware for the mental fatigue of the community and some of the restrictions and measures that have been put in place upon us. But the good news is that the Public Safety Commissioner recommended not to extend the State of Emergency so we are officially in a recovery period as of today.”
Kahnàwake is now automatically in a Recovery Phase that is implemented for a period of up to 120 days, subject to extension should it be deemed necessary or ended if the Council of Chiefs declares a State of Normalcy has been achieved. A live update will take place on Tuesday from Kahnàwake911 on Facebook Live and broadcaost on your community radio station, K1037 (K1037.com).
