Serge Simon Attempts Comeback With Run For AFNQL Leadership

Former Kanesatake Grand Chief Serge Otsi Simon is attempting a political comeback. He confirmed to K1037 News that he has thrown his hat into the ring to run for the leadership of the Assembly of First Nations Quebec, Labrador (AFNQL). Simon served as Kanesatake’s Grand Chief for a decade until he lost to Victor Bonspille in the last election in July.

“10 years at the table of I would say one of the most difficult communities in Quebec gave me enough experience, I think, on how to handle pretty much anything,” Simon told K1037 News. “So, I felt strongly that I still had a lot to offer when it came to helping out with native issues. Helping the Chiefs of Quebec, that’s something I just wanted to take a crack at it.”

Simon is the only candidate opposing incumbent Ghislain Picard, who has served as the AFNQL Chief since 1992. Picard is seeking an 11th consecutive mandate.

“I made it clear to the Chiefs though, some were not happy with the present situation. I said ‘look, I’m not here to oppose Ghislain, I’m here simply to offer a different proposal. I’ve worked 10 years side by side with Ghislain and I respected at times and even admired the guy on his approach. I think it’s a health democratic exercise when you have two candidates. Having someone come in by acclamation, that’s fine every now and then, so is a nice health competition,” Simon said.

The vote will be held, likely virtually, on January 25th.  The AFNQL is made up of 43 First Nations in Quebec and Labrador.
