Kahnawake Closes to Non Community Members During Quebec Curfew Hours
Written by Paul Graif on 31 December 2021
“We are in crisis mode,” Public Safety Commissioner Lloyd Phillips said as he appeared on Kahnawake 911 on Facebook on New Year’s Eve afternoon.
The curfew will not apply in Kahnawake, according to Peacekeeper Chief Dwayne Zacharie. However, once you leave Kahnawake, you could be subject to the Quebec curfew rules which go into effect tonight at 10 pm until 5 am. It will be in place for at least the next three weeks.
If you are an essential worker and have to be out between the hours of 10 pm and 5 am, then it is incumbent upon you to get a letter of permission from your employer.
A new directive for Kahnawake states that access to the community is for residents only between the hours of 10 pm and 5 am. “It’s to keep Kahnawake safe. That’s what it’s about,” Zacharie said.
Kahnawake schools will follow Quebec’s announcement and remain closed until January 17th. Phillips said.
Daycare services in Kahnawake will remain available for the children of essential and front line workers.
The Task force will meet next on Tuesday, January 4, 2022.
Meanwhile clinics for COVID-19 vaccines will resume in the middle of next week in Kahnawake at the Knights of Columbus Hall:
Wednesday, January 5 – 9am to 4:30pm
Friday, January 7 – 9am to 4:30pm
Saturday, January 8 – 9am to 4:30pm
This Vaccination Clinic is open to those 18 years of age and older for first, second or third dose.
