Deadline to Have Snow Tires on Your Vehicle is Today

Written by on 1 December 2021

Today is December 1st and that means, by law in Quebec, all road vehicles must be equipped with winter tires. They must remain on until March 15th. It’s due to safety.

“Once the temperature dips to below 7 degrees (Celcius) the rubber compound of all-season tire will freeze and it will make it harder for you to maneuver vehicle especially in an emergency situation,” said Kyle Zachary, the Public Relations Officer with the Kahnawake Peacekeepers. “If you have to brake suddenly or suddenly swerve then your car is going to have less traction if you’re on all-season tires because the rubber has frozen and it makes it harder to grip the ground.”

Zachary says fines range between $200 and $300 plus court costs, for offenders. However, the Peacekeepers understand there are issues at garages with staffing and supply chain problems as well.

“We engage in community policing,” Zachary said. “We understand that things happen in life. We are just letting people know that today is the day.  Maybe not today you won’t get a ticket, but in the future when you’re observed without your winter tires on your vehicle you could be subjected to a fine.”
