Four new yellow school buses are coming to Kahnawake this afternoon to help transport between 800 to 875 schoolchildren daily.

Spencer McComber is the Daily Transportation Manager for the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake.

“Today we are picking up four buses at Bluebird in Drummondville to help ease the overflow of students this year, and to help speed up service so children won’t be behind schedule anymore.”

It will bring the bus fleet in the community up to 29. The new buses are expected to be outfitted with a protective plastic shield for the drivers and then be ready to go as of Tuesday morning. According to Chief McComber the busses will first ease the load in the communitty and then speed up things at external schools.

“Particularly in Chateauguay the buses were continuously late. There were many instances where children were waiting a really long time and this is going to eliminate that waiting period.”

The plan is to keep the four rental buses for the duration of the school year. Their need will then be reassessed in June.
