Golf Club Lease: Negotiations Worked Out

Written by on 10 September 2021

The Kanawaki golf club lease in Kahnawake may soon be finalized with the lot holders, the club and Indigenous Services Canada (ISC). MCK Elected Official Cody Diabo says that negotiations have been worked out between the MCK, ISC and Kanawaki:

“Probably the only thing I can really say is that it’s more substantial, without getting into too much detail until it’s officially signed, but it’s not a slight increase, it is something that is more substantial that what is currently being paid by Kanawaki.

Diabo says ISC have already been sent out letters to the approximately 60 lot holders in the community with the confidential details of the proposed deal. Part of the proposal maintains that the land be used for golf and recreational activities only, according to Diabo.

“If there’s no agreement, or final agreement, then it will have to go to arbitration, because Kanawaki is opting to renew the lease for another 25 years, a rental amount has to be, let’s say, agreed upon, but decided.  In the event that there can be no agreement at this point it would have to be done through arbitration.:”

Regardless of the outcome the lease has been exercised for the next 25 years.
