A national organization to support wellness and healing initiatives for thousands of survivors of federally run Indian day schools officially launched today with the naming of its Board of Directors.
The McLean Day School Settlement Corporation livestreamed the ceremony.
Assembly of First Nations Regional Chief Roger Augustine is part of the non-profit organization’s board.
“This is an emotional, powerful day for all of us and this is just the beginning and I am so proud,” he said.
The Federal Government will provide $200 million towards the organization.
Canada signed a $1.47-billion settlement in 2019 with thousands of former students who suffered abuse while attending federally operated Indian day schools.
Day school students were left out of the 2006 Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement because the day schools were operated separately.
