A vaccine passport showing proof that you are fully vaccinated against COVID 19 is going to be needed to access non-essential services in Kahnawake.
Lloyd Phillips is Commissioner of Public Safety. He made the announcement on Kahnawake 9-1-1.
“After examining what is happening and considering the impact on our community, it was decided as a public health and public safety measure that we will also be implementing the QR code system for Kahnawake.” said Phillips.
The passport won’t be needed in retail stores but Phillips said more details will be available in the coming days.
Quebec’s vaccine passport system will be in use starting September 1st and will be required to access restaurants, bars, gyms and other public events.
There are 2 active cases of COVID 19 in Kahnawake but public health notes there has been a steady increase in vaccination rates in the last week, especially among youth.
“First doses for 12-15 year olds is at 64% which is up from 59% and second doses are also at 64%. This is up from 10.9%. What we are seeing therefore is that all of our 12-15 year olds who received one dose also received their second dose. This is really great news.” said Lisa Westaway, Executive Director at the Kateri Memorial Hospital Centre.
Officials continue to urge residents to get vaccinated. To book your appointment, you will need to call KMHC at 450-638-3930.
