Shooting in Kanesatake Leaves One Dead

A shooting outside of a cannabis shop in Kanesatake has left one man dead. The Surete du Quebec says they received a call at 3:40 Thursday afternoon about an armed assault outside the Greenroom on St-Michel near the Pines.

The 47 year old victim was rushed to hospital but succumbed to his wounds late in the day, according to SQ spokesperson Marc Tessier. The suspect or suspects fled the scene.

A large perimeter has been set up and SQ officers, some in plain clothes, are going door to door to gather information and speak to possible witnesses.

Grand Chief Serge Otsi Simon said it was inevitable that something like this would happen.

“There’s a lot of us that were expecting this to happen sooner or later,” Simon told K1037 News. “There have been 14 arsons in the community since James Gabriel’s house went up (in 2003). There has been nine attempted arsons on residences, businesses and vehicles. It was an escalation for a while.”

While Simon believes the shooting today was gang related, the SQ says they don’t have any evidence of that at this point. Although Police say the victim was known to them.

Tessier says that as a precaution there will be an increased police presence in the community tonight and over the next several days.
