MCK Election Set for Kahnawake Sports Complex

Written by on 9 June 2021

Complicated by pandemic measures, a site has finally been chosen and approved to host the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake elections next month. The Kahnawake Sports Complex will be open from 9 am to 6 pm on Saturday July 3, 2021 for community members to cast their ballots for Grand Chief and Chief. The site was announced by Electoral Officer Angus Montour in a news release Wednesday morning.  “It was a problematic task to find a location that could both allow the community to cast their vote, while at the same time follow the COVID-19 safety guidelines. With the vastness of the Sports Complex, I believe we found the perfect venue that addresses all concerns,” Montour said.

Montour says there will be several safety measures in place that day to ensure social distancing and proper hygiene. Voters will enter the complex at the front and after they are done, exit from the back of the arena. A location has yet to be chosen for the special advanced poll on Saturday June 26th. Montour says plans may be in the work to bring ballots to those who have some difficulties in getting around. The Electoral Officer says that Meet the Candidates night on Wednesday June 23 will almost certainly be held virtually this year. The hours are 6-11 pm.
