Karihwanoron Funding Assured for Years to Come

The long term viability of Karihwanoron Mohawk Immersion school has been ensured. Administrator Joely Van Dommelen, today she signed documents making it official.

“In order for Karihwanoron to come to this signing it was agreed that Karihwanoron will keep its autonomy,” Van Dommelen said. “We can keep teaching in the way our original tenet has been since 1988.  We will continue teaching academics in the way we have been teaching since then. Maybe with some upgrades of course.”

For Van Dommelen it has been a yearly struggle to find funding for the school. “A little bit emotional, I guess,” she said. “We had word back in 2019 that we did receive funding through MCK and through INAC (Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada), but today is the day that official documents were finally signed for a long future ahead of us.”

Funding from INAC depends on the number of students that are enrolled. There are 58 students enrolled this year.
