The first candidate has declared their intention to run for Grand Chief in the upcoming Mohawk Council of Kahnawake (MCK) election. Gina Deer has been an elected official since 2012. She first confirmed the news to the Eastern Door. “I’ve been approached by members of the community asking me what my intentions would be because there’s a lot of concern I guess in the business community,” Deer told K1037 News. “I’ve been working on economic development and gaming from the beginning of my career with the MCK.  So a lot of the members that I have worked with over the years wanted to know what the future looked like. I had made a decision to run for Grand Chief.”

But Deer says she hadn’t intended on making the announcement so soon. “I was not really prepared to share it,” she said. “I wanted to talk with my family.  Once I started to do that of course things got out. I confirmed with everyone that had approached me that yes, I am running. So I thought it would be beneficial just to say it out in thhe open.”

The MCK Election will be held on Saturday, July 3.
