The Kahnawà:ke Peacekeepers (PKs) and the Kahnawà:ke COVID-19 Task Force are teaming up and launching a youth education initiative on safe ways to gather during the Pandemic.
Kyle Zachary is the Public Relations Officer with the PKs, he says that officers are carrying around Shop Kahnawà:ke Gift Certificates. “They are going to be distributing them to the youth of the community that they see who are setting a good example and following the directives that were set out by the Task Force,” Zachary said. “So if they are seen and masked and distanced and following the directives then they’ll find themselves with a nice $10 shop Kahnawà:ke gift certificate.”
Zachary says it’s all about community policing. “That’s really important to us given where we live,” he said. “We all live and work here on the territory. The whole reason we got into this profession was to serve our community. This is one way. We always look for the way to implement community policing first.”
While there are currently four active cases of COVID-19 in Kahnawà:ke, the recent outbreaks were mostly due to youth gatherings.
