It’s Been One Year Since Parade that Honoured Kahnawake’s Front Line Workers

One year ago today, May 12, 2020, a parade snaked through Kahnawake to honour the work of the front line workers in the community. The parade was the brainchild of K1037s Sandra Schurman. “I can’t believe it’s already been a year,” Schurman said. “It literally seems, maybe not like yesterday, but definitely last week, so that went fast. At the time, if you recall, the whole purpose of the parade was an appreciation parade for all of Kahnawake’s front line workers because the pandemic was still fairly new and nobody was certain what was going to happen. Nobody knew how to handle this really. All we knew is that we were told to stay home but the front line workers still had to go to work. So the parade was for them just to show our appreciation for them still going out and serving the public.”

The pandemic has dragged on and is now 14 months old.

“At the time nobody knew that a year later that not really much has changed. But the sentiment still very much stands because we still very much appreciate our front line workers who are out there every day doing what they have to.”
