There are six active cases of COVID-19 in Kahnawake, after an announcement on Saturday that a second student at Kahnawake Survival School (KSS) tested positive for the coronavirus.
Lisa Westaway, the Executive Director of the Kateri Memorial Hospital Center (KMHC), says those cases have forced more than 12 times that many people into isolation. “That is concerning mostly due to the fact that most of these cases are related to gatherings,” she said while a guest on the Morning D on K1037. “We currently have four clusters of cases in the community. There is an alarming 49 households that are in isolation. Of those six positive cases we actually have 85 contacts and an extra 28 people who are in isolation because they happen to be from the same household as these contacts.”
Restrictions on gatherings remain at eight people outdoors per household, with the measures of wearing masks, distancing and hand washing always in place. Also visits indoors remain at only one other household once per week.
Late Saturday the Kahnawake Education Center (KEC) announced the positive test at KSS, Robin Delaronde is the Director of Education at the KEC. “I want to first of all confirm that there is not an outbreak at KSS,” Delaronde said. “Local public health has confirmed with us that these two cases are not associated at this time and therefore, the situation that we’re currently experiencing is not an outbreak.”
In a release, the KEC said immediate measures have been implemented to ensure the KSS student body, staff, and families’ health and safety remain a top priority. “We had to take measures in terms of those who were associated with one class,” Delaronde told K1037 News. “Because we do have small numbers, obviously so we’re fortunate in that way at KSS that students are in smaller classes.”
The first case has recovered. However, since the test result is 12 days old, the class remains closed and remains in isolation for two more days.
These are the only two cases at KSS since the beginning of the pandemic. Additional disinfecting measures took place over the weekend on top of the daily cleaning that occurs at the school.
