Over Kahnawake’s Objections Gaming Law Moves on to Canadian Senate

Written by on 23 April 2021

Over objections from the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake (MCK), on Thursday Canadian Lawmakers passed bill C-218 to legalize single-event sports betting. The bill will permit betting on single games in sports. That is something that is currently against the law, except for horse racing. The Government says it is in a bid to protect and win back customers from offshore sites, U.S. casinos and illegal bookmakers.

MCK elected official Gina Deer works on the gaming portfolio. “Kahnawake had made a presentation to the standing committee and obviously the standing committee has not paid any attention to that with this passed third reading, without any acknowledgement or consideration,” Deer said.

Deer says this will affect the bottom line and hurt the money being pumped into the community.

“Over time this is going to have a great impact because we also know that Ontario was waiting for this legislation to pass so they could start to do their conduct and manage model. So it’s going to definitely choke Kahnawake out from what is happening in the on-line industry,” she said.
