Clinton Phillips Says He Won’t Run for MCK Again

Clinton Phillips says he won’t run for Council in the upcoming summer Mohawk Council of Kahnawake election. “I didn’t want to make a big deal out of it,” Phillips said. “I did this three years ago. Around this time I informed the community that I would not be running for Council. At the time Grand Chief (Joseph Tokwiro) Norton talked me out of it. Plus the whole rationale back then was that I wasn’t feeling good. I was really quite sick. They started doing a few things for me a the Hospital, the Royal Vic (Victoria). After about a month and a few transfusions I was feeling a heck of a lot better so I decided to change my mind.”
Phillips says he means it this time as he will be turning 59 in August. “12 years at Council and almost 30 years at Kateri Hospital (KMHC), it’s like 42 years of working for the community. I’m experiencing mixed emotions for sure, absolutely. But like I said three years ago you have to know when to leave the party. I think I’ve done a stellar job. I hope people are satisfied. Their trust in me, I’m overwhelmed by the trust. Four elections in a row I ran and I won. I’m just so grateful to the community for having so much faith in me.”
