There are new cases of COVID-19 in Kahnawake.

“We are at five active cases in the community. So there have been new cases identified today (Tuesday),” said Lisa Westaway, the Executive Director of the Kateri Memorial Hospital Centre who was appearing on Kahnawake 911 live on Facebook Tuesday afternoon. “We still want to make sure that you’re aware that we have to remain vigilant, always masking, distance and hygiene and really protecting those around you, your vulnerable population as much as possible while still providing that support.”

One of those new cases has, for the first time, directly affected a daycare in Kahnawake.

“One of our staff members has tested positive for COVID-19,” said Natalie Beauvais the Executive Director of Step by Step Child and Family Center. “I just wanted to assure the community that all the precautions have been taken. That public health has contacted us and everybody in the building. The Children are safe. The children are not said to be at risk.” In a statement from Step By Step: “Following an assessment of risk by the Local Public Health Team, no children are identified as contacts and therefore, are not required to self-isolate. Two additional staff members with no symptoms are in isolation at this time and are being monitored closely,” the release stated.

In a further effort to reduce the spread of the Coronavirus, Super Bowl parties are not permitted in Kahnawà:ke this Sunday. Kahnawa’kehró:non are being asked to watch the game in your own home with a maximum of one other family.

“We just want one other household is allowed to be in your home at this time,” said Robyn Montour the General Manager of the Public Safety Division of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake. “So, we don’t want big Super Bowl parties in the community or in someone’s household. We want just want one household at a time.”
