Canada Post Office in Kahnawake is Open

A day after the Post Office and Tewatohnhi’saktha were evacuated because of smoke, the first floor of the building at the Services Complex has reopened. The second and third floors remain closed as repairs are being performed on a faulty sprinkler system. Linda Benwell is the Postmaster in Kahnawake. She says the smoke from the faulty pumps did not directly affect their offices on Wednesday.

“We are open. We’ve just learned that we’re going to be able to remain open for the rest of the day from from the fire department (KFB) and the building manager here,” Benwell said.

That will allow her and the staff to get back to work. Benwell says the Post Office has never been busier with line-ups often stretching outside in recent days. “It’s incredible. It’s really incredible. We’re swimming in packages and mail. And now we’ve lost a whole day so bear with us.”
