There are now four active cases of COVID-19 in Kahnawake. Lisa Westaway, the Executive Director of the Kateri Memorial Hospital Centre (KMHC) appearing on Kahnawake 911 on Facebook Thursday afternoon. “These are four new cases,” she said. “The ones I had been referring to previously have recovered. We had three new positive cases yesterday (Wednesday) and one new positive case today (Thursday). There are also contacts of these positive cases that are in isolation. We are seeing more people being tested on a daily basis. We know that we are at a very much increased risk right now within the community and therefore, we have to be as safe as possible.”

Public Health has been able to trace the origin of most of the nearly 50 cases in Kahnawake since the beginning of the pandemic, but not all of them.

“There are some that we do know where they originated from and others no,” she said. “There’s a bit of a mix. As we’ve seen with the previous cases the last couple of weeks, we have had, I would say up to four cases now where the person who has become positive has no idea where they could have contracted the virus from. We know that it’s around. It’s from going out and doing groceries and our day to day lives that there is the possibility of contracting the virus. That is why we have an importance and why we want to keep saying that we can all be contagious at any particular time without even knowing it.”
