Four Active Cases of COVID-19 in Kahnawake

COVID-19 is on the rise in Kahnawake again. “We do have four active cases,” said Lisa Westaway, the Executive Director of the Kateri Memorial Hospital Centre, who was appearing on Kahnawake 911 on Facebook Tuesday. “Two of those four cases we know where they came from, the localized point of contact. However, two of those cases we are not able to determine where the transmission happened. So this is worrisome to us. It tells us we have a possibility that we have more cases in the community.”

The Kahnawake COVID-19 Task Force feels that the situation will worsen before it gets better mostly due to gatherings around the upcoming holidays. “We do expect that the end of January will be especially difficult for number of cases, number of hospitalizations and possibly increased number of deaths,” Westaway said.

As a result of holiday gatherings, which the Task Force is asking the community to limit as much as possible, there is likely to be more positive cases. “What we are recommending is that we stop all gatherings, so all household visitation between January 5th and January 18th. So on good faith we are really asking that for those two weeks we do not have any other household in our home,” Westaway said.
