Pair of Kahnawakero:non Plan Montreal Rally in Solidarity with Mik’maw Fishers

Two sisters from Kahnawake are organizing a rally in Montreal this coming weekend in support of the Mi’kmaw fishers in Nova Scotia. Waienhawi and Kaiatonoron Lahache have invited people to participate in what they are calling a “Peaceful Solidarity March” on Sunday at noon at Place Emilie-Gamelin downtown. “We feel like it’s important to bring the awareness off the reservations and into the cities so that it gets more recognition for what’s happening to not only the Indigenous community in Nova Scotia but the other communities in Canada as well because there’s a majority of them right now that are fighting for rights and they’re not being respected as people,”  Kaiatonoron Lahache said.

There will be several guest speakers as well as traditional drummers and dancers on hand. The march is scheduled to get underway at 1 pm.  “We have I believe over 200 people that are going to be there. But we’re hoping to get a lot more recognition,” Kaiatonoron Lahache said. “I know that our flyer and the event of Facebook got shared by some of the Warriors in New York. It got shared in Massachusetts. It got shared in Wisconsin, Mississippi, Mississauga, Ontario, Toronto, so we are getting a lot of recognition. We are hoping that there are hundreds of people that show up.
