State of Emergency in Kahnawake Extended Through Most of July

Written by on 15 June 2020

State of emergency under the Kahnawake Emergency preparedness law has been extended for another month until July 21st. The mandate of the Kahnawake COVID-19 Task Force has been extended as well.

The Task force held a meeting today, they say that June 22nd is the date they are targeting to allow for all personal care, hair salons, esthetics, and therapeutic services to open.

Outdoor Fitness classes will be permitted for groups of up to 8 people, provided that special measures are observed, including physical distancing and other health recommendations.

Singles Tennis will also be permitted.

The second community health check is underway. “It’s important because it will give us more information as we head towards the next phase of opening,” Lisa Westaway, the Executive Director of the Kateri Memorial Hospital Center (KMHC), said. “It also gives an indication of how things have been doing since we opened on June 1st.”

Westaway said that there has not been an increase in testing. “We have only done three tests from business that reopened. And all business have been doing their daily checks of their employees. All three were negative and there have been no new positives up until now from the opening.”

Sunday is Father’s Day. “We will have a drop off as we did for Mother’s Day for the families of members at the KMHC,” Westaway said. Store bought snacks that are pre-packaged will be permitted as will cans or bottles of soda, and clothing that is well identified. Workers will be disinfecting everything before it comes in to the hospital. Drop off will be at the testing site on Sunday from 10 am until noon.

There will be a live question and answer period on Kahnawake 911 on Facebook on Tuesday afternoon. Lloyd Phillips, Lisa Westaway, MCK Chief Frank McComber and Peacekeeper Chief Dwayne Zacharie will be on hand to answer questions from the community. K1037 News Director Paul Graif will moderate. You can send your questions to: [email protected]

The live Facebook events on the Kahnawake 911 page will no longer be held on  Saturdays and Sundays.
